The Dive Guide and Divers Roles

Many divers choose to dive with a dive professional, so what is there role and responsibilities and those of the divers too ? The dive guide’s proper role is to assess the dive site’s conditions, safety and suitability for the group. The guide must make sure the divers are informed, and, if he or she deems it necessary, cancel the dive. The dive guide is also supposed to give a thorough briefing on how the dive will take place, hazards and interesting stuff, and to make sure that everyone gets into and out of the water okay. They can also set…

Dive Against Debris 2018

Every year Padi and Dive Centres around the world organise beach and dive site clean ups with thousands of volunteers. It is an opportunity to help raise awareness for the environment and of course to help keep the marine world and our seas and oceans free from the ever increasing pollution from debris. This is an announcement from Padi to launch this years event and particularly for us here in Cyprus; You’ve seen it first-hand. Marine debris is not only unsightly, it’s dangerous to sea life, hazardous to human health, and costly to our economies. You understand the devastating impact…

Scuba Diving and Headaches

Diving headaches have spoiled many dive trips with a number of different causes associated with headaches and diving. It can be something as simple as a mask squeeze, an excessive constriction around the neck, a dental issue, a cold water freeze around an uninsulated head and breathing in saltwater. However, it can also be as complicated as a symptom of decompression sickness (DCS).  Here are some common causes, preventions, and treatments for diving headaches. A sinus headache is caused by a sinus squeeze during ascents or descents. The symptoms are pain in the forehead, pain in the face, or pain in…

Enriched Air Diver Course - Nitrox

Enriched Air diving is a must if spending more time exploring the underwater world is a priority for you.  The Enriched Air Diver Course is a game changer and a natural evolution for divers as they gain experience. Diving with enriched air nitrox increases your no decompression time, especially on repeat dives. It also decreases your required surface interval, giving you the chance to make the most of your travels by diving longer and more frequently. When you look at the evolution of dive gear and technique, a primary driver is time. Getting cold ended dives, so we invented wetsuits. We…

Discover Scuba Diving - what is involved ?

People often contact us to enquire about trying diving for the first time and are particularly interested in what is involved and how long it takes. Discover Scuba Diving is an experience program designed for those that have always wanted to see what diving was like, or to see if it is something they want to complete a course in and get fully qualified. This is a great experience for individuals, couples or a group of friends and family to enjoy.   After getting you kitted up and getting some paperwork done we start the day with some theory and…
Buddy diving – is it really that important as a beginner?  The short answer is yes, of course.  As a diver, the buddy system is extremely important and useful.   Whether a diver is diving with a newly certified diver or an experienced diver, the buddy system offers plenty of benefits to both parties.  The system helps a diver to practice the traits of a good buddy such as buddy checks.  This system allows the divers to learn from each other, practice the concept of two being better than one, give assistance, and to share the experience.  The most imperative reason…

What makes a good Dive Center ?

There are many elements that come together in creating and running a very good Dive Center.  Vital to all this and the absolute top priority has to be it's staff. A warm welcome encourages people to feel at ease when visiting with their enquiries and then the knowledge, professionalism and experience of the staff should soon become apparent. Dive professionals should have good local knowledge of the dive sites, all available training courses and the diving equipment available.  Any level of assistance should be available and the dive staff should have a level of competence and be qualified to handle…

Additional Boat Dives for 2018

Our Dive Centre already offers a wide range of different types of dive sites for all levels and tastes. We are also always searching for new or new access to dive sites that will enhance what we can offer to our divers and regulars who love to dive somewhere new. One of our partners in Paphos has recently purchased a new RIB that is licensed for up to 15 divers, we dived off it last week and it is a great diving platform and a fantastic new asset. This will open up a lot of dives to us off the…

Seasonal Diving in Cyprus

Divers often ask if there is diving in Cyprus all year round and what is it like in the autumn and winter. The simple answer is yes of course you can dive here any month of the year, the pleasant suprise is the changes in the sea conditions and the changes in the marine environment that are so exciting. Obviously the weather and sea conditions become less reliable but you get beautiful sunny days and good sea conditions over many days in the winter months here. From early April and May the sea quickly warms up as summer temperatures start…

New Diving Sites in Cyprus

Following on from a number of new artificial reefs and protected marine reserves there are plans for more new dive sites in Cyprus. We have already seen the success of a number of new wrecks around Cyprus being sunk by the authorities including the Constandis and Lady Thetis in Limassol. There are also 2 off Protaras and another off the Pafos coast. There has also been an ongoing effort to expand marine reserves around the island and we have a number including the Zenobia, the wrecks and reef at Limassol and St Georges Island off the Akamas along with the…

Cyprus and Try Diving

'Try Diving' as many people call it is a diving experience for those who have never dived before and just want to try it for the first time. One of the official dive agency names for the programme is Discover Scuba Diving and it can come in many forms. In the UK for example it is mainly done in swimming pools due to the outside conditions and for safety reasons. Here in Cyprus Discover Scuba Diving is very popular especially during the main summer months when the school holidays are in full swing and families want to try their first…

Best Dive Sites for Marine Life

Diving in Cyprus offers a wide range of different types of diving and dive sites to choose from. What suprises many of our divers is the abundance and diversity of marine life that can be found on a number of excellent dives here. With protected reefs and wrecks being developed in recent years and with good local diving knowledge we continue to visit dive sites and experience dives that rival or even better the Red Sea for it's marine life. With the likes of the Zenobia wreck, the Limassol wrecks, St Georges Island, Copo Island and many more we have…

Cyprus Diving and Turtle Protection

Divers and non divers of all ages just love turtles, they must be one of the most loved and admired creatures on earth. Diving in Cyprus we see many every year in the water and come across many nests all along the beaches of Cyprus. However we also come across many crowded beaches where turtles are being pushed out, many beach obstacles for them to overcome, fishing nets drowning many every year, boats hitting turtles, ignorant human activity and with discarded waste also a major hazard it is a wonder how these magnificent marine animals manage to survive at all.…

Diving in Cyprus

We are often asked just how good is the diving in Cyprus and why we are in Pissouri as a 5-star Dive Centre. Pissouri village itself is a traditional and extremely welcoming village with a range of lovely tavernas and restaurants. It has stunning views of the mountains and sea and is only a few minutes’ drive to Pissouri Bay and beach, which again boasts some incredible options for dining and entertainment. Not only is this picturesque village an ideal location for a relaxing holiday, offering up to 326 days of sunshine a year, but we are located within easy…

Cyprus diving conditions

For a lot of people Cyprus is an island of constant sunshine, flat seas, warm water and crystal clear waters. Over the summer that is generally true but what about all year round, are Cyprus waters always perfect for diving ? We generally dive all year in Cyprus and the sea conditions can vary greatly as with any other sea or ocean. The biggest factor here is the wind and wind direction but in general you can have excellent conditions and fantastic visibility all year round. In the spring, March to early May, the water is just starting to slowly…

Improve Your Air Consumption While Diving

It is the questions we get asked a lot, how do you use less air and get longer bottom times while scuba diving ? Why do I use my air quicker than the next person, what is his or her secret ? Does this mean that you are not as physically fit as the next person or as skilled in the water as they are ? Not necessarily. Although fitness, body size and lung size among other factors do make big differences here are some tips to maximise your dive time and reduce your air consumption. Breathe deeply and slowly.…

Master Scuba Diver Course

Becoming Master Scuba divers with Cyprus Diving Adventures was something Oli and I were keen to achieve. Not only do fewer than two percent of divers achieve this rating but it would also coincide perfectly with becoming PADI Divemasters and enable us to gain more experience with a range of different diving while also working towards becoming PADI professionals. Having already completed our Deep Diver speciality course in 2014 diving on the amazing Zenobia Wreck and also becoming Rescue Divers we decided to choose 4 other specialities that would be perfect for continuing our diving education journey. Enriched Air Diver…

Cyprus diving is world class

After diving all over Cyprus for the last 15 years, and after speaking with many of our visitors, I can honestly say that Cyprus really does have some of the best diving in the world. Whether you come for a days diving or a complete dive package of one or two weeks diving, Cyprus has something for all qualification and experience levels. Take the Zenobia wreck for starters, this is a top 4-7 wreck in the world depending on whose poll you read, and for good reason. This is a massive wreck, still in good condition, full of interest and…

My Cyprus Diving Adventure

Our Cyprus diving adventure started in January 2014 when my husband Oli and I visited Cyprus for the first time, a 30th birthday surprise for Oli. We had a fantastic week of diving which included a range of diving in Paphos, Latchi as well as two day's diving on the exhilirating Zenobia Wreck. Our first two dives on the Zenobia was on Oli's 30th birthday and was our first big scale wreck dive, and decending onto this 172 meter-long Swedish ferry really took our breath away. We had a week of beautiful flat calm, crystal clear waters and were overwhelmed…

Rescue Diver Course

The Rescue Diver course is often mentioned as being one of the most rewarding courses a diver can be involved in. It takes a recreational diver into the realms of being more aware of their own safety whilst diving as a whole and also of others as they enter, exit or whilst diving in the water. It also gives you the skills necessary to actively participate in a diving emergency, something that requires a number of skills that a non recue diver could not assist with due to lack of knowledge and experience. Being a rescue diver is a prerequisite…
The moment I took my first breath underwater at Cardiff International pool back in 2011, I knew that scuba diving would be a part of my life forever.  My husband Oli, having qualified as a teenager on a family holiday in Fuerteventura, was delighted that we would be able to share such incredible underwater adventures together.  In the years that followed, as well as doing a lot of diving locally in Wales; Chepstow Quarry and some beautiful bays on the West Wales coast to name but a few, Oli and I were lucky enough to dive in some incredible places…

Over a period of just a few days recently we had 3 diving milestones to celebrate with a 50th Birthday dive, a 150th dive and a qualifying 50 metre dive ! Stan Moore, who has enjoyed over 1000 dives, dived on the Zenobia wreck for a second day on his 50th Birthday. We dived on Nitrox down to 39 metres to the egg lorry and then followed the lorries along a perfect profile exploring all the cargo's and marine life among the wreckage. It was a perfect dive to celebrate his birthday with his partner Tarnia. At the same time…

Diving in Cyprus with Aliens !

During the winter and spring months in Cyprus there is an explosion of life that is so varied and vast it is like discovering new alien life forms every day. There is a mass of marine life being carried on the sea currents with millions of small life forms including jellies, planktons and young organisms enjoying the cooler waters.  Large jellyfish arrive and can be seen in big numbers all around Cyprus. Only this week we rescued a number that had ventured into all sorts of areas of the Zenobia wreck and had to be helped back out into the…

Scuba Diving Navigation

Underwater navigation is a key skill for many divers especially professionals leading dives with a number of divers following their lead. It is a skill that is learned over time and with experience, but for many divers it is a complete mystery. A lot of holiday divers for example dive every year with a dive leader of some sort to guide them on the dive site and take them to the best spots. After a dive many divers often ask me how on earth did I find my way and mention how completely disorientated they were during the dive in…

Zenobia Wreck Stories

The Zenobia wreck in Cyprus has a lot of stories written about her journey from Sweden to Cyprus, stories about what caused her to sink and details of the varied cargo onboard. Stories are everywhere on the internet about what happened on her maiden voyage and there are numerous conspiracy theories about what caused the Zenobia to sink. We all know how divers stories can get exaggerated and even more astonishing with every beer. What is certain is that she was on her maiden voyage from Sweden to Syria, she had major listing problems to the port side, she had…

The Best Diving Buddy

10 years ago a young, keen guy came to see me about diving and little did I know that this would be the start of 10 great years of diving together and a great friendship. John Leyden started his Padi Open Water Course and immediately I could see he was a natural diver and eager to be a good diver. We dived a lot in Paphos during and after his course and it wasn't long before he went on to complete his Advanced Open Water Course where he fell in love with the Zenobia wreck. The passion John had for…

Scuba Diving Best Practices - Equipment Care

For many divers owning your own equipment is something that is built up over a period of time and it can be a major investment at the time. Many have personal preferences, are advised by more experienced individuals or try a range of equipment before deciding. Many may only purchase a few items such as a mask, fins and a computer. Either way it is important to select the right equipment for the individual and the environment they will be diving in. However it is even more important for divers to then look after, maintain and care for their dive…

Zenobia Wreck Diving Profiles

Thousands of divers come to Cyprus every year with one dive site high on their diving agenda - the Zenobia wreck. But so many only consider diving her for the one day, some come to dive the wreck for a whole week, but the majority only plan for the one visit. The Zenobia is a massive wreck stretching out almost 200 metres in length including debris on the sea bed, the wreck itself is 172 metres from bow to stern. With depths of 16 to 42 metres and with so many levels of the wreck to explore this is a…

Diving Best Practises - Safe Ascents

Right from the very beginning as new student divers we start to learn about safe ascents, what it means and why we need to ascend correctly. This is a key skill that every diver needs to have, the ability to properly control how they ascend either to a shallower diving depth or when we head to the surface at the end of a dive. Every diver knows that as we dive we start to absorb Nitrogen from the air we breathe. As we dive deeper we absorb more due to the increasing pressure and we also absorb more the longer…

Scuba Diving Instructors - Good and Bad ?

There are thousands of diving Instructors in the world and many are excellent while a lot unfortunately are just not very good. So why is this ? What makes a good Instructor and what makes a bad one ? Surely dive organisations ensure the quality of their Instructors and Divemasters with all providing the same standard of education ? You only have to watch some Instructors teaching or the people they have taught diving to see that not everyone teaches to the same standards with some being sub standard and even dangerous in some cases. A dive centre is only…

Lapsed scuba divers and refresher dives

For a lot of reasons many qualified divers can look to go diving and suddenly realise that they haven't dived for quite a long time. With our busy lives intended plans can be sidelined or forgotten and time can pass by so quickly. What you thought was a lapse from diving of 1 or 2 years can actually be 3 or 4 years when you check the log book ! So what can or should a diver do next to get back in the water ? A lot depends on the divers experience. How many dives have you done,…

Equalizing techniques while scuba diving

During a flight as the plane descends we all feel the pressure change on our ears and there are techniques used to equalize this pressure. An old trick of the cabin staff was to give everyone a boiled sweet as this would cause people to regularly swallow which helps to equalize the ears. In diving as we descend we also have to adapt our bodies to the new environment. Proper equalizing is so important during scuba diving and here we look at how and why. Water is denser than air. When walking up and down the stairs for example you…

Scuba Diving Best Practices - Boat Diving

Boat diving is the one of the most popular types of diving in Cyprus. Divers around the world enjoy diving from ribs, hard boats and liveaboards every day of the year. Most divers will know, but many are unaware to a point, that there are protocols and tips to follow to ensure that everything runs smoothly and safely aboard a dive boat.  We have all been on a dive boat when just getting on board is a stressful experience and the organisation on board can make it all seem a bit chaotic. Before a diver boards a dive boat they should…

Diving and Dive Fitness

The question is often asked of scuba diving as to what level of fitness is needed to be able to enjoy and carry out the sport. The answer is that all age groups, shapes, weights and sizes can enjoy many fantastic dives by following a few simple rules and tips. Initially any budding diver has to answer a simple medical questionnaire that will highlight any potential health problems before they even get in the water. Most can be esily checked and cleared for diving by your own physician. In general if there are no issues on the medical questions then you…

Cyprus Marine Life

Diving in Cyprus offers such a wealth of diverse and well populated marine life, and it is so good it would suprise some divers. Indeed our divers often comment on how good the marine life is in Cyprus and how better than expected it was. Some even comment that their diving experience with us in Cyprus was better than the likes of the Red Sea. There is a dive location that we visit at least once or twice per week where we see large shoals of sea breams and massive barracuda. There are literally shoals of large Grouper, dozens of…

Night Diving in Cyprus

Night diving in Cyprus is very popular and there are some excellent dive sites for all levels of experience. During a night dive divers can see completely different types of marine life and behaviours compared to that seen during dives in the day. Some details need to be briefed before any one does their first night dive but any qualified diver can easily experience this type of diving. It is also a good idea to have dived the site before at some stage in daylight to fully appreciate the difference in the dives and to help with orientation. A good…

Scuba Diving Best Practices - Buoyancy

In recreational scuba diving and technical diving one of the stand out most important skills is that of buoyancy. Or in other words the skill of being in complete control while diving. With time and dives a divers buoyancy should improve with continued practice and experience. A lot depends also on the quality of the initial training received and if the importance of it was highlighted at the time. Once a diver has a good understanding then general buoyancy will improve with time. Another way to improve your buoyancy is to complete the Peak Performance Buoyancy course. This covers general…

Cyprus Diving and Why We Dive

While diving across Cyprus with friends, customers and divers we meet we often find ourselves discussing why it is that we are all so addicted to diving. I have often said that as long as I am underwater it doesn't matter where we are or what we see it is purely for the fact that I am underwater that addicts me to the sport. I could dive in a puddle and be happy. One of the things I remember when I first started diving was the complete calm underwater, how quiet it was and how it really is like visiting…

Scuba Diving and Safety Stops

While they were recently completing their Advanced Open Water Course on the Zenobia wreck two divers raised the question of how important safety stops really are after completing dives. Along with good ascent control and correct ascent rates, safety stops are a fundamental and most important part of safe diving procedures at the end of a dive. During every dive a diver is taking on levels of Nitrogen that are being absorbed into tissues as a result of what depths you dive to and how long the dives are. The deeper we dive and the longer the dives are the…

New Wreck Dives in Cyprus

In recent years the Cyprus authorities, with support from the Cyprus Dive Centre Association, has been purposely sinking new wrecks in waters all around the island. The sole purpose being to develop more diving tourism to the island and to develop a number of marine reserves. To date they have sank 5 new wrecks with great success in Limassol, Cape Greko and Paphos. A number of marine reserves are planned including St Georges Island off the Akamas National Park close to Latchi. In between the 2 wrecks at Limassol a large artificial reef has been dropped onto the sea bed and…

Winter diving in Cyprus

Divers always ask me if you can dive in Cyprus over the winter. Cyprus enjoys an extended summer season, due to it's location at the eastern end of the med. The standard diving season is normally April to October, however high sea temperatures last through November and well into December. Sea temperatures drop from 25degC at the end of October to about 19 during December. This is plenty warm enough for a full suit and hooded vest or a semi-dry wetsuit. Visibility can also be excellent at this time of year with cooler waters and the sea can be as…

Diving with Turtles in Cyprus

Diving all around Cyprus offers many opportunities to dive with the magnificent loggerhead and green turtles. We are increasingly seeing more and more of these wonderful creatures in Cyprus waters, but their continuing protection is a constant concern. While we have seen record nests on parts of the island we still see many discarded dead corpses floating out at sea or washed up along the coast. The main threats are fishing nets, boats and beach tourism. There are great efforts from the Green Party and environmentalists to raise awareness of how to protect turtles out to sea and also to…

After scuba diving and technical diving in Cyprus for the past 12 years I can only say it is truly one of the best diving spots in the world. Now let me explain why that is. Why Cyprus is a top Diving destination

So why do so many people choose to come diving in Cyprus ? Why is it such a popular diving destination for all divers from beginners to experienced and technical divers too ? All we hear is 'there are no fish in the meditteranean' so again why do divers visit Cyprus in their thousands ? Firstly it is a great dive location to try diving for the first time, or to learn to dive, or indeed to do any kind of dive training. This is due to Cyprus having a range of dive locations and depths to suit any diving…
Here are some more images of the Zenobia wreck in Cyprus before and after she sank.  These pictures show the main cafeteria as it looked complete with 70's style decor and the famous Zenobia red tartan carpet. Now it is on it's side, still with the carpet intact, and a great penetration dive for most divers due to how safe and easy it is to penetrate the area. The light fittings can still be seen, as too can the main serving area with drink vendors and general kitchen fittings. The cafetreria windows are at depth of 17 to 35 metres…

Bridge of the Zenobia

This is what the Zenobia wreck looked like on her maiden voyage and how she looks now as a main diving attraction. We have obtained a lot of images recently of the Zenobia which clearly show the bridge, canteen, accommodation area and the ship before and during her sinking. The image on the front page shows the massive bridge of the Zenobia and the fantastic image below shows how it looks now with a diver diving through it.  When you dive on the Zenobia you constantly try to visualise how she used to look and imagine the people and cargo…

Pissouri Village Cyprus

Pissouri is a traditional village situated halfway between Paphos and Limassol. It consists of the main village and an area down by the beach at Pissouri Bay. The village has a lovely square with shops, bars, banks, tavernas, coffee shops and the main village church. Leading off from the square are pedestrianised streets with more shops, bars and a range of restaurants. The dive centre is just a 2 minute walk from the square.  Pissouri is not a big tourist resort and that's why we love it so much. It is far more traditional than say Paphos and feels a…

Zenobia Wreck Marine Life

The wreck of the Zenobia is well documented as one of the top wreck dives in the world and is famous for it's easy penetration dives and masses of cargo. But not many people know that the Zenobia is also a protected marine reserve and it is illegal to fish within a large area of the wreck. Over many years the wreck has developed it's own eco sysytem and an artificial reef is now a big part of the attraction for divers to the Zenobia. Masses of marine life now patrol around and inside the wreck including turtles, dusky grouper,…

Lionfish arrive on the Zenobia

A lot has been written and discussed recently about the invasive marine species coming from the Red Sea, through the Suez Canal and into the eastern meditteranean. These have been generally welcomed by divers and dive centres who have enjoyed this additional colourful marine life to Cyprus waters, and with no harm to the populations of local species. The topic of all conservations now is the Lionfish. This fish has a fearsome reputation and is renowned throughout the world for it's population explosions and the impact on the local marine life and eco-systems. In recent years it was first spotted…

Zenobia wreck mystery fish

We were having a great dive on the Zenobia Wreck when we spotted this fish. I have never seen this fish before in Cyprus in over 15 years of diving right across the island and we were all struggling to identify it. It has never been seen on the Zenobia before, even though we do get a few suprises here from time to time. After making a few enquiries we found out the following. The fish spotted on the Zenobia wreck has been spotted elsewhere too. Apart from the Zen a fish of the same appearance has been seen in…

First Turtles of the Mating Season

Recently we spotted our first turtles of the season as they start to arrive in Cyprus waters to mate. We were able to dive up so close without disturbing them and one even allowed us to dive with her for quite a while. Diving with turtles is always a great scuba diving experience and we should do everything we can not to harrass or disturb them when diving. To share the seas with these amazing creatures is simply out of this world and an experience not to be missed. In Cyprus we mainly have the privilege of seeing green and…

New Divemasters

Big congratulations to Lowri and Oli for achieving so much since joining us in May. This was one of the most rewarding courses I have ever taught and to see them develop with every day was just so pleasing to watch. Paphos diving. Amphora at new dive site.

A group of us recently went to dive Manijin Island on a beautiful spring morning. The sea was flat calm and we had excellent visibility in the water. We have dived the island many times and always enjoyed its superb caves, walls and marine life. All of the divers were relatively experienced and we knew we would have plenty of air to make a very long dive. The dive went as planned as always and we were enjoying another great dive. On the way back I decided to take a new route and dive a lot wider on the island…

Easter diving conditions

Easter is a fantastic time to dive in Cyprus and normally marks the start of the summer diving season. It can fall as early as March or as late as April, but the main season here normally starts in early April with holiday makers and divers starting to arrive. The weather at Easter becomes more predictable with sunny days starting to quickly warm the sea. Daytime temperatures are on average about 25 degrees but can reach over 30 degrees quite easily. The sea in winter never really gets below 17 in the winter but can do so at greater depths.…
